The JV Mustangs ended their 2008 season with an impressive 17-3 overall record, including a perfect 9-0 record against conference opponents. The Mustangs outscored their opponents 192-104 on the season, shooting 41% overall. The Mustangs averaged 17 steals per game compared to 10 turnovers per game. The Junior Varsity Mustangs ended their season with a win against the New Trier Trevians on Wednesday night. The Mustangs' defense contained the Trevians during the first quarter, not allowing any natural goals the entire quarter. The Trevians' first goal came at the close of first period when the Trevians drew a penalty shot as Mundelein tried to block a last second shot ending the quarter 2-1 Mustangs. Pat Helliwell Extended the lead 37 seconds into the second quarter with a goal. Each team scored one more goal in the very physical second quarter ending the half 4-2 Mustangs. The 'Stangs were the only team to score in the uneventful third quarter, increasing the lead to 3. Nick Mandas put a 6 on 5 goal away 43 seconds into the fourth to increase the lead to 4. The Trevians answered back with 2 goals in the next two minutes. Brandon Horsch Scored an insurance goal with 1:31 left. The Mustangs contained the defense the last two minutes of the game, aside from a last second shot by the trevians' goalie that skipped bar down to end the game 7-5. The JV Mustangs extended their winning streak to 8 on Monday Night with a win against the Fremd Vikings. The Mustangs Led against the vikings the entire game. They ended the first half with a 2 goal lead, assured by Goalie David Dickinson blocking a penalty shot with 30 seconds left in the half. The Mustangs opened the game up in the second half, outscoring the Vikings 4 to 1 in both the third and fourth quarter, led by junior Justin Sebring. JUNIOR VARSITY MUSTANGS TAKE CONFERENCE TITLE!
The junior varsity Mustangs won the Prairie-Lake invite this weekend with a perfect 4-0 record, outscoring their opponents 39-19. This brings the JV ‘Stang’s overall record to 15-3 with 3 games left in the season.
PL INVITE: MUNDELEIN 6 STEVENSON 5
The Mustangs beat the Patriots for the second time this season in an exciting championship game. Nick Mandas opened scoring for the ‘Stangs two minutes in with a counterattack goal. Sean Trinka added another goal just 30 seconds later with a drive to the goal and pass from Pat Helliwell. The Pats answered back with a goal with 1:25 left in the first quarter. Trinka quickly responded with another goal. Brandon Horsch rounded out scoring in the first with a goal with 22 seconds left in the quarter. Helliwell extended the lead to 5-1 with a goal one and a half minutes into the second. Stevenson cut the lead to three with a goal from Andrew Block. In the third, Block narrowed the margin even more with another goal. Not to be outdone, Helliwell scored from 5 meters out. The Patriots ended scoring in the third with a six on five goal from block and a six on five goal from O. Yang. The Mustangs managed to hold on for the last 30 seconds of the game for the championship.

The Mustangs managed to kill all 8 of the Scouts’ 6 on 5 opportunities to win 9-3. The Mustangs put away 5 goals in the first half. At the end of the first half, the Scouts were rewarded a penalty shot. Goalie David Dickinson blocked it, keeping the Scouts scoreless in the first half. The Mustangs got off to a slow start against the Cougars on Saturday morning, spotting them 3 goals to their 1 in the first quarter. The Mustangs slowly crept back in the second quarter to tie the game at 3. With help from Pat Helliwell’s 6 goal second half, the mustangs outscored the Cougars 9 to 1 for the remainder of the game. In the boys’ first game of the tournament, the Mustangs and Wildcats ended the first quarter even at 2. In the second quarter, 4 different Mustangs scored a goal while the defense kept the Cats scoreless in the second to gain a 4 goal lead. The Mustangs did not look back from there, Outscoring the Wildcats 7-3 in the second half. Goals: Pat Helliwell (5), Brandon Horsch (4), Nick Mandas (2), Ryan Eick, Evan Kraus. MUNDELEIN 9 LIBERTYVILLE 7
In an exciting conference match up, the Mustangs defeated the Wildcats 9 to 7. The Mustangs opened scoring with two goals in the first quarter. The Wildcats’ goalie snuck a goal in at the end of the first quarter to put them on the board. In the second, Ryan Eick and Brandon Horsch each scored a goal, but the Mustangs’ defense allowed Libertyville to score 2 more goals by the end of the half. To Start the second half, the Wildcats continued their scoring run with three goals, keeping the ‘Stangs scoreless until a a last second six on five goal from Ryan Eick. This brought the Mustangs to within 1 of the Cats. Pat Helliwell Evened the score at six one minute into the final quarter. A minute later, Horsch put the Mustangs ahead with a six on five goal. Nick Mandas extended the lead with a six on five goal with 1:38 left to play. The Wildcats threatened with a goal at 1:13 left in the game. Helliwell assured the win by scoring a goal with a minute left in the game leaving the final score at 9-7
MUNDELEIN 12 VERNON HILLS 1
The Mustangs Routed conference foe Vernon Hills Cougars on Tuesday. The Mustangs defense held the Cougars to only 7 shots, stealing the ball 25 times. The offense took 32 shots, making 12. Goals: Pat Helliwell (3), Sean Trinka (2), Evan Kraus (2), AJ Caughey, Erik Anderson, Sean Falconer, Nick Mandas, Brandon Horsch. Assists: Helliwell. MUNDELEIN 9 MCHENRY 3
After an exhilarating Varsity win, the JV Mustangs took down the McHenry Warriors. The Warriors scored first 3 minutes into the game, but the Mustangs answered back with a goal with 1:35 left in the quarter. This started a 4 goal streak for the Mustangs. Solid defense and a strong offense led by Pat Hellwell kept the ‘Stangs up for the remainder of the game. Goals: Helliwell (6), Sean Trinka (2), Nick Mandas. MUNDELEIN 15 BARRINGTON 4
The JV Mundelein Mustangs overtook the Barrington Broncos 15-4 on Thursday. The Broncos had no answer to the Mustang's strong offense as 5 of the 8 field players scored at least one goal. On the defensive end, the Mustangs held the broncos to only 9 shots and amassed 15 steals. Pat Helliwell led scoring with 6 goals, Evan Kraus and Sean Trinka each had 3 goals, Eric Anderson netted to with Ryan Eick scoring 1. Helliwell helped score another 4 goals on assists with Mandas adding another. Leading the defense on steals was goalie David Dickinson with 5, Trinka was close behind with 4, Sean Falconer and Eick Contributed 2, while Helliwell and Kraus each stole the ball once. In the cage, Dickinson had a solid 55% save percentage.
MUNDELEIN 4 DeSMET 9
The JV Mustangs were unable to handle the DeSmet (St. Louis) Spartans over spring break as they fell 9-4. The Mustangs' inability to handle the Spartan's Counter attack and failure to capitalize on several man up opportunities late in the game cost them the "W". Goals: Justin Sebring: 3, Nick Mandas, 1. Steals: Sean Falconer (4), Brandon Horsch (2), Sebring (2), Evan Kraus (2), Erik Anderson, Mandas. Goal Keeping: Brandon Horsch: 6 Saves (54%), 2 steals. David Dickinson: 2 Saves (33%), 5 Steals.
MUNDELEIN 9 PALATINE 2
The JV Mustangs Came out strong against the Palatine Pirates, taking a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. While the Mustangs only took 12 shots, they made an incredible 75% of them and 100% of their man-ups. Leading the scoring for the Mustangs was Brandon Horsch with 3. Pat Helliwell (4 assists) and Sean Trinka each Scored 2, with Evan Kraus and Sean Falconer adding a goal each. Nick Mandas, Trinka and Horsch led the defensive effort with 3 steals apiece, AJ Caughey, Helliwell, and Kraus all added one steal each. Goalkeeper David Dickinson Dominated with an 80% save average, 6 steals, and an assist while helping the Mustangs kill 4 of Palatine's 5 six on five opportunities.

MUNDELEIN 6 - NEUQUA VALLEY 12
The JV Mustangs lost their second game of the season on Monday night to Neuqua Valley. In the game, the Mustangs scored first in the first thirty seconds of the game. However, Neuqua Valley was quick to respond with 5 goals. The Mustangs managed to quell the wildcats' offense in the second quarter to bring the game to 7-5 at the end of the half. However, the wildcats went on a 4-1 run in the third quarter and the mustangs could not bounce back against the pressure defense and strong counterattack of the wildcats.
Goal Scorers: Pat Helliwell (4), Evan Kraus, A.J. Caughey. Steal Leader: Sean Trinka (7) and David Dickinson (5). In the goal, Dickinson came up with 2 saves.

MUNDELEIN TAKES 3rd AT ST. PATRICK'S FROSH/SOPH INVITE!
The Freshman-Sophomore Mustangs Placed a best ever 3rd in the St. Patrick’s High School Frosh-Soph Tournament. On the weekend, the Mustangs went 3-1 competing against some of the top frosh-soph teams in the state. Most impressively, they went 3-0 on Saturday with no subs. Special Congratulations to Pat Falconer and Frank Lukacs who were selected for the all tournament team.
Mundelein 7 – Brother Rice 10
The Mustangs started the tournament with a loss to the Brother Rice Crusaders on Friday night. The Mustangs Struggled offensively for the first 3 quarters, only scoring 1 goal to brother rice’s 9. However, in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs made a late comeback and outscored the Crusaders 6-1. However, the offensive surge was too little too late and the mustangs fell 10-7. Scoring for the Mustangs were Pat Falconer (3), Brandon Horsch (2), Frank Lukacs (1), and Will Davidson (1). The Defense was led by Pat Falconer with 7 steals while Frank Lukacs and Goalie David Dickinson each had 2 steals. In the Goal, Dickinson tallied 6 saves for a 37.5% save percentage.
Mundelein 15 – Libertyville 2
On Saturday morning, the mustangs had a change of fortune against conference foes the Libertyville Wildcats. The offense did not struggle whatsoever against the wildcats as the mustangs opened up the game with a 6-0 first quarter. The mustangs held their lead for the entirety of the game and held the Cats to only 2 goals. Scoring was led by freshman Frank Lukacs (6). Other scorers included Pat Falconer (4), Will Davidson (3), Brandon Horsch (1), and Nick Mandas (1). The Mustangs had an impressive 25 to 9 steal to turnover ratio in this game. Pat Falconer led the mustangs’ stifling defense with an astounding 10 steals, aided by horsch (3), Sean Falconer (2), Mandas (2), Lukacs (2), and Davidson (2). Goalkeeper David Dickinson blocked 9 shots making his save percentage an impressive 81%.
Mundelein 14 – Loyola 13 (OT)
The Mustangs’ closest game was against Loyola Academy Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs spent most of the game in the lead, although Loyola Academy kept within striking distance the entire game. The Mustangs led the ramblers 10-8 in the last two minutes of the game. A defensive breakdown from the mustangs let in a shot from 6 meters out from Loyola to bring the score to 10-9. The Mustangs were unable to score a goal on their ensuing possession. The ramblers with had the ball with under a minute left and earned an ejection. The shot from 6 meters out again hit the goal post and Loyola was able to recover the ball and score off the rebound to even the score at 10. The Mustangs offense again, could not score a goal on the next possession, but their defense managed to keep the Ramblers from scoring on their last possession. A last second shot from Goalie David Dickinson went just wide to bring the game into a shootout. The Mustangs outshot the Ramblers in the shootout 4-3. Shootout Goals were scored by Frank Lukacs, Nick Mandas, Brandon Horsch, and Pat Falconer. Goals: Falconer (7), Lukacs (4), Mandas, Horsch, and Will Davidson. Steals: Falconer (6), Mandas (2), Lukacs (2), Davidson (2), and Horsch. Saves: David Dickinson (10)
Mundelein 11 – Evanston 4
Despite being the third game played by all the players that day, the Mustangs managed to find the energy to outscore the Evanston wildkits 11-4 in the third place game. Pat Falconer led scoring with 5 goals, with Lukacs close behind with 4, Davidson added a goal, and Rookie Sean Falconer scored his first goal. On the Defensive end, Pat Falconer led the team in steals with 9, Lukacs had 3, and sean falconer had 3. In the Cage, Dickinson amassed 10 saves with a save percentage of 71%, 2 steals, and an assist.

MUNDELEIN 8 - WHEELING 3
The Junior Varsity Mustangs opened up their 2008 season with an 8-3 victory against the Wheeling Wildcats on Tuesday night. The game started slow with Wheeling scoring the only goal in the first quarter to pull ahead 1-0. The Mustangs quickly found their offense and scored 8 goals in the last three quarters to wheeling's 2. The Mustangs were lead in scoring by Pat Helliwell with four goals. Sean Trinka Added 2 goals, with Danny Rivi and Evan Kraus rounding out the scoring with a goal each.
Sean Falconer had the only assist of the game.
The Defense was led by David Dickinson with 4 steals. Ryan Eick and Nick Mandas each came up of with 3 steals, Helliwell added 2 steals, while Erik Anderson and Falconer each contributed a steal. In the cage, dickinson amassed 7 saves while only letting in 3 goals giving him a save percentage of 70%. The Mustangs showed their tenacity by outshooting the Wildcats 29-12. We're looking to have a very successful season!
