8/2/07: 2007 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL BOYS CAPTURE IHSA STATE SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Add another accolade to the already impressive list of achievements for the 2007 Varsity Boys Volleyball Team! The IHSA volleyball officials recently selected the Mundelein Mustangs for the 2007 State Sportsmanship Award. This tremendous honor caps off the best volleyball season in MHS history, with the team clinching the Sectional Title that secured their place in the Elite Eight at the State Tournament. The team also garnered dozens of individual awards, ranging from all-conference to all-state. The Mustangs finished the season with a 36-2 record.

The Mustangs pulled out a thrilling victory over Buffalo Grove 25-20, 17-25, 26-24, Tuesday night at Hersey High School to capture the Sectional Title. The Mundelein Police Department welcomed the Champs back into town with a police escort back to the high school. The 36-1 team heads to Quarter-Finals on Friday night at Hoffman Estates High School where they will play the Griffins of Lincoln-Way East at 5pm. We'll see you there!!!

4/28: MUSTANGS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT TOURNEY TITLE
Now ranked 2nd in state, the Mustangs captured their unprecedented fourth tournament championship Saturday at Benet Academy in Lisle, beating the 4th ranked Wildcats of Neuqua Valley for the tournament title. The Mustangs move to 28-1, with a weekend tournament record of 20-0. They host the Libertyville Wildcats on Tuesday at 5pm.

'STANGS DROP ANOTHER HEARTBREAKER
MHS CAN'T GET OVER VERNON HILLS IN 25-21, 25-23 HOME LOSS
The Mustangs home court didn't provide the necessary advantage against Vernon Hills. It seemed like every Cougar wide shot caught the line while every MHS one just missed as the Mustangs dropped their 2nd straight match, leaving them with a 5-3 record.
The match-up brought out a good crowd for both teams (including two dudes banging on a drum for Vernon Hills) and they were rewarded with two intense, exciting games. In both games, MHS had stretches of brilliant play only to frustratingly have nice leads evaporate.
The 'Stangs will try to regroup on the road next Monday at Elk Grove before a Tuesday contest against Lakes. Then it's the big Lake County Tourney at...Vernon Hills on Saturday, April 15.
MUSTANGS WIN THRILLER AGAINST LEYDEN FOR 1st
'STANGS IGNITE AT HOFFMAN INVITE!
MHS TAKES HOME TOURNEY TITLE!
Senior Keith Motycka saw the ball floating to him at the net with the score 14-13 MHS in the tie-breaking 3rd game against Leyden for the championship of the Hoffman Estates Invitiational. At that moment, the spirited Mustang bench started to rise out of their chairs in anticipation of a big finish. Motycka didn't disappoint as he elevated and blasted the finishing kill to give MHS the title and the championship t-shirts.
The Mustangs started the day by losing a heartbreaker to New Trier in their pool play finale 23-25, 25-23, 15-10. That put MHS in the position of facing the 3rd place team in last year's state tourney, Oak Park River Forest and their all-state candidate, outside hitter Christopher Lewis.
The 'Stangs rose to the challenge and wiped out the Huskies 25-15, 25-15 to advance to the title game against Leyden.
MHS overcame some unforced errors late in the first game to win 25-20, but the Huskies dominated game two 25-15 as the 'Stang mistakes piled up. In the deciding third game, Ryan Sullivan got the Mustangs off quickly with some great serves and MHS sprinted out to a big lead. But OPRF mounted a huge rally to eventually tie things up 12-12, setting the stage for the big finish.

SERVES UP OPENING NIGHT VICTORY BY BESTING BULLDOGS 25-14, 25-14
A nice-sized
crowd came into the MHS Gym on opening night to see what the highly-regarded
Mustangs boys volleyball team was all about. The fans came out
with their high hopes confirmed as coach George Dressen's
Mustangs blasted the Waukegan Bulldogs in straight games 25-14,
25-14.
Every 'Stang showed up big, especially junior "Big
Mike" McElligott who help MHS control things at
the net. McElligott blasted 10 kills in the 2
games and completely intimidated the overmatched Bulldogs up front.
Senior Keith Motycka starred as well with his
serves and passes. Junior setter Ryan Sullivan handed out 19 assists in the 2 games on 53 of 54 sets. Another
junior, Chris Johnson, was perfect on his 9 serves
while hustling everywhere on D. Senior Warren Lentz and juniors Brian Rausch and Spenser
Clark had solid games, too.
Next up...the Mustangs start off Spring Break by competing in
the talent-heavy Hoffman Estates Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
