MUSTANGS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH 4-1 WIN OVER ZION-BENTON
The Mustangs looked ready for action and primed to finish the season off with a win, and that's exactly what they did. The boys finished off Zion-Benton from a previously rain-postponed match by a final score of 4 to 1. The 1st Doubles team of Buslawski/Panganiban ended up on the wrong side of the Win/Loss columns, but fought back from a first set deficit of 1-5 to make the set competitive at 4-6, then won the 2nd set behind the serving of Buslawski and the returning of Panganiban; 6-3, and then took the match to a tight 3rd set which culminated in a tiebreak to fall just short. 2nd and 3rd doubles made positive strides heading into the Conference tournament; giving Patel & Stadlman a record of 6-8 since partnering together back in Mid-April. At singles, both Patner & Nelson won without dropping a single game.
Patner finishes the regular season with a record of 20-2; while Nelson's final tally ends up at 13-7.

MUSTANGS 4 - NORTH CHICAGO 1
The Mustangs got back in the win column on Wednesday. Although only for the 5th time this season, the team continues to show promise and improvement coming to the end of this crazy weather-laden season. For the first time in '08, all 3 doubles positions were all simultaneously victorious. Panganiban & Buslawski couldn't be stopped on serve as "The Bus" (Davey Buslawski) seemed to roll through games and improved his serve percentage and won nearly 75% of his first serve points, by forcing several errors. His partner, Panganiban kept his opposition reeling with spin that is hard to describe. Patel & Stadlman made their match interesting in the 1st set, but pulled things together and finished off their opponents in two. Deri & J Silva got up early on the Warhawks and didn't let go of the lead to win in straight sets as well.
1st Singles: Nelson (M) def. Greg Miller (NC) 6-1, 6-2
2nd Singles: Ashton Irby (NC) def. Edwards (M) 6-3, 7-5

MUSTANGS TIE 1, LOSE 2 AT CARMEL QUAD
When the weekends come around...it seems as though 'Mother Nature' has her way with the Boys' Tennis season. Another cold and windy day seemed to take care of the Mustangs as they competed in the cross-town rival - Carmel Quad. Although the results don't show in the win/loss column, the Mustangs continue to make progress at the doubles spots, trying to sure up some positions and make competitive teams nearing season's end. The lone win for those teams was at the #3 spot with Patel & Stadlman taking a thrilling tiebreak (coming from behind) to win their match against McHenry and knot the match up at 3-All! In singles action, Patner & Nelson continue to tear through their competition, trying to make names for themselves and solidify spots in the NSC Conferenc Tournament. Both players went 3-0 today, which also saw Patner drop a set to Reid Etter (Carmel) in a tiebreak (3-7), but then roar back to win the 2nd set and 3rd set breaker rather convincingly (10-4).

From Tuesday, April 22:
LAKE FOREST 4 - MUSTANGS 1
The Mustangs traveled to Lake Forest to take on the Scouts, and couldn't keep the momentum from the weekend, as they were downed 4-1. The one win for the Mustangs was an impressive showing by #1 Singles, Tyler Patner. Patner improved his season record to 16-2 with a thrilling 2-set, 2 tiebreak match versus Sophomore Andy Walker of LF. The match see-sawed back and forth through both sets, with each player taking the lead back from one other after each changeover. Patner played tough, and brought his mental 'A' game to win this important conference match. The Mustangs have the day off today, but will return to the courts to take on Zion-Benton Thursday and participate in the Carmel Quad this weekend.
1st Singles: Patner (Mund) def. Andy Walker (LF) 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3)
2nd Singles: Brett Ford (LF) def. Nelson (Mund) 6-1, 6-1

From Monday, April 21:
WOODSTOCK FIGURES OUT MUSTANGS, WIN 3-2
The Mustangs just couldn't figure out a way to sneak a win in at a doubles position as everything they tried was thwarted by Woodstock. Even the quickness and confusion at #3 doubles (Patel & Stadlman) couldn't get the number of games they would need for a victory despite a hard-fought and fast-paced match. Both singles players for the Mustangs continued to win, and Ben Nelson has no problem playing either close matches or from behind. After winning the first set, Ben found himself down 4-1, but rallied and stepped up his game to close things out in only 2 sets, winning the 2nd 7-5.
1st Singles: Patner (M) def. Ryan Ortmann (W) 6-0, 6-1
2nd Singles: Nelson (M) def. Steven Rausch (W) 6-3, 7-5
1st Doubles: John Drennen / Logan Taira (W) def. Buslawski / Harris (M) 6-0, 6-0

From Saturday, April 19:
MUSTANGS GET BACK ON TRACK, FINISH INVITE 3-1
The Mustangs Boys Tennis Team has got back in the win column this weekend by winning 3 out of their 4 matches in the 'Mustang Invite.' The boys had to wait until 9:45 to get play started (about an hour after the scheduled start time) due to some inclement weather. After the boys had finished nourishing themselves with pancakes during the delay, play began with a match vs. conference rival, Zion-Benton. (Thank you to the Girls Soccer Team for hosting the Pancake Breakfast, of which most everyone from the tennis invite participated).
GREAT JOB!
Some of the highlights of the day: Masoom Patel & Eric Stadlman pulling off a magnificent 3-1 record at #3 doubles, as well as Ben Nelson performing the same duty at #2 singles. Tyler Patner, the team's #1 singles player was one of only 2 players/teams to finish the day with an unblemished 4-0 record.
Congratulations to the entire team, as none of this could have been accomplished without the support and teamwork of everyone on the roster. Keep working hard, and look for the Mustangs to take on Woodstock, Lake Forest & Zion -Benton this week.

LAKE ZURICH SQUEAKS BY MUNDELEIN 3-2
Lake Zurich visited MHS on Thursday for a conference match-up that would see their former #1 singles player from 2007 at #1 doubles, and a slew of new talent that covered the court. Panganiban & Deri used their very unorthodox play to force Lake Zurich to change their gameplan several times throughout the match, but didn't have enough tricks in their bag to figure out a way to beat the Bears. They fell short in 2 closely contested sets. The match of the day was contested at #2 singles. Nelson & Pavlina played for a total of 2:45 (2hrs, 45min) needing tiebreaks to finish the first two sets, and almost 45 minutes to close out the match in the final set. Ben Nelson looked sluggish early, not knowing where to hit the ball against his less experienced yet scrappy opponent; but was able to turn on the heat, figure out a way to put things together and took the 3rd set, 6-2. Great Job Ben!!!
1st Singles: Patner (Mund) def. Garrett Johnson (LZ) 6-0, 6-0

HIGHLAND PARK 5 - MUSTANGS 0
Mundelein made another trip out into the wind and weather that is 'Spring' to take on the Giants of Highland Park on Wednesday. HP came out ready to play from top to bottom and took care of the Mustangs, winning the match 5-0. The two most intriguing matches occurred at #1 singles and #2 doubles. Tyler Patner and Sam Barnett (HP) played a first game that lasted nearly 15 minutes, and the match continued to be competitive although the score didn't dictate. Davey Buslawski and Chris Deri absolutely used the wind to their advantage and made several balls float over their opponents' head and land in, leaving the opposition baffled. The Mustangs continue to improve their games and look ahead to the rest of the conference schedule as the season hits the midway point.
1st Singles: Sam Barnett (HP) def. Tyler Patner (Mund) 6-2, 6-0
2nd Singles: Tyler Manci (HP) def. Ben Nelson (Mund) 6-0, 6-1

From Tuesday, April 15:
LIBERTYVILLE DEFEATS MUNDELEIN 4-1
After several weather-related cancellations and reschedules, the Mustangs tried to get on track versus rival Libertyville. The wind played a huge factor in the outcome of all the matches, especially when the ball was hit a few feet over the net. Everyone fought hard, and had to play their multiple opponents (wind included) to the finish. Patel & Deri fought hard at #1 doubles, while #2 and #3 doubles utilized the skills they had to cause some confusion on the other side of the net, but still fell short. Patner and Nelson felt like they were playing several people on the court at the same time as the wind forced balls in that would normally land several feet out. Nelson played his game against Raman and came up short, but at #1 Patner was able to solve the riddle that was Erik Scanlan, 4 & 3. Mundelein will look to take on Highland Park in a sectional battle tomorrow afternoon at HPHS.
1st Singles: Patner (Mund) def. Erik Scanlan (Lib) 6-4, 6-3
2nd Singles: Anish Raman (Lib) def. Nelson (Mund) 6-2, 6-3

3rd Doubles: James Dicello / Jon Isaac (Lib) def. Harris / Stadlman (Mund) 6-2, 6-0
From Monday, April 7:
MUSTANGS FALL TO VERNON HILLS 3-2
It was a rather windy and chilly day for tennis, but the Mustangs weren't able to fight off the chill and fell in a close match 3-2 to Vernon Hills. Brian Panganiban & Davey Buslawski fought hard in their match at #2 doubles, leading in the first set 4-3, but unable to close. Several games in both sets went to Deuce, but the duo fell short losing in straights.
Both singles players for the Mustangs won in straight sets, with Ben Nelson leading the way with an impressive 0 & 0 performance against a newcomer to the Cougars line-up. The Mustangs will look to improve on their record tomorrow afternoon against North Chicago.

LAKES DEFEATS MUNDELEIN 4-1
The Eagles of Lakes HS came to Mundelein with a purpose, and not just to beat the potential weather. Upon arrival the teams began play immediately, hoping to beat that threat of rain. The Mustangs were not able to muster very much on the scoreboard in doubles against Lakes, but several of the games the boys played ended up going to Deuce, and were coming up just short on converting for those pivotal points. Ben Nelson didn't have enough gas left in the tank to take his opponent to a third set at 2nd singles, but did put up quite a fight in his straight set match. Tyler Patner continues on a roll this season, defeating his much improved opponent 3 & 3 to improve to 6-1 on the '08 campaign.
1st Singles: Patner (Mund) def. Andrew Yopp (Lakes) 6-3, 6-3

From Wednesday, April 2:
MUNDELEIN FALLS SHORT TO GRANT 3-2
The Mustangs returned to the courts after a reschedule on Tuesday to face the Grant Bulldogs. Singles play was controlled by the Mustangs as both players (Juniors - Tyler Pater & Ben Nelson) won their respective matches. Patner won his match in straight sets as Ben Nelson saw his first action of the season, started quite slowly in the first set, but finally put things together in the final two frames to close out his opponent in three sets.
The Doubles play of the Mustangs has been showing improvement over the last week, juggling the line-up to try to find pairings that 'click'. All three teams lost in straight sets but each had several moments to shine as they prevented the shutout! Good luck to the boys the rest of this week against Lakes & Wauconda.
1st Singles: Tyler Patner (Mund) def. Alex Marginean (Grant) 6-0, 6-4
2nd Singles: Ben Nelson (Mund) def. Clay Geunther (Grant) 1-6, 6-3, 6-1
1st Doubles: Joe Loris / Josh White (Grant) def. Masoom Patel / Brian Panganiban (Mund) 6-0, 6-1

From Friday, March 28:
MUSTANGS LACK LUSTER; FALL TO LARKIN 4-1
After the brief snowstorm that hit our area Thursday, the Mustang Boys Tennis Team took to the courts once again. This time, when the 'boys of summer' took to the courts, their games seemed to be left in a brief hibernation. The Royals (Larkin) came ready to play and took advantage of the Mustangs sluggish start, beating them rather handily 4-1. The lone bright spot for Mundelein on this day was the close to stellar performance of Junior Tyler Patner, who handled his opponent easily; 6-0, 6-1. Patner improves to 4-1 on the young season. The Boys will look to right the ship this week versus Wauconda (Tues), Grant (Wed), and Lakes (Thurs).
1st Singles: Tyler Patner (Mund) def. Selwyn Hansana (Larkin) 6-0, 6-1
2nd Singles: Nick Shlagial (Larkin) def. Josh Edwards (Mund) 6-1, 6-0

MHS BOYS TENNIS HAS ROCKY START TO '08 SEASON (1-3 @ Warren Invite)
The Mundelein Boys Tennis Team started the 2008 season making the short trip to Gurnee for the annual Warren Invite. Although the day started well with a win over Warren's #2 team, the win was followed up by three consecutive team losses. Yes, the 1-3 record is deceiving because the team results were a 3-2 win, followed up by back-to-back 2-3 defeats, and a 0-5 loss to close out the day. I want to thank the team for being willing to get up early today and hit the courts hard this cool spring (winter...haha) day! This was only day one, and there are brighter days ahead for the hard court tennis contestants.
The day's biggest achievers were the Mustangs' #1 singles player, Tyler Pater; as well as the doubles team of Brian Panganiban & Chris Deri...both posting 3-1 records on the day! Way to start the season!
