MUSTANGS
TAKE 4th AT SECTIONAL AND ADVANCE QUALIFIERS TO STATE!
The Mustangs took 4th
at the IHSA Sectional meet yesterday at Lake Forest and qualified
individuals in 3 events for the state meet next weekend.
The day started our strong again as a solid performance from divers Nikki Spillone and Courtney Wilhelm helped qualify them for the state meet. From there the momentum
continued as the 200 Medley Relay of: Megan Thompson,
Cailtlin Falconer, Nicole Kerstetter, and Liza
Dickinson swam underneath the qualifying standard to
punch their ticket and break the school record as well. Megan Thompson lowered her own school record
and continued the momentum for the Mustangs as she then qualifed
individually in the very next event -the 200 Freestyle.
From there the Mustangs
had some heartbreaking swims as both Liza Dickinson and Sara Marciniak missed qualifying in the 50 Free by .16
and .33 of a second respectively. The close misses would
continue as Megan Thompson missed by .32 of a
second in the 500 Free. The 200 Free Relay of Liza
Dickinson, Sarah Falconer, Sara Marciniak, and Nicole
Kerstetter moved up to 3rd place but missed the state
cut by .93 of a second. And finally the 400 Free Relay of Liza Dickinson, Sarah Falconer, Nicole Kerstetter, and Megan Thompson swam within .2 of the school record, but
missed qualifying for state by .89 of a second.
Overall the Mustangs
did well as they moved up a place from last year's Sectional and
will return 8 out of 12 Sectional athletes.
The Mustangs next compete
at the state meet at Evanston High School on Friday and Saturday.

NIKKI SPILLONE NAMED
ALL-AMERICAN DIVER
Mundelein High School senior Nikki Spillone has been ranked one of the top 100 divers in the country by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. Nikki is ranked number 55 out of the top 100 public high school female one-meter divers in the country, and is one of five divers from Illinois who made the All-America list. A BIG congratulations goes to Nikki for this accomplishment.
12/2/04
MELISSA SETHNA NAMED ILLINOIS DIVING COACH OF THE YEAR!
Mundelein High School diving coach Melissa Sethna has just been named the IHSA Illinois Diving Coach of the Year. She was surprised with this honor at the IHSA All-State Banquet on December 8. Sethna's two top divers, senior Lucy Hirt, and junior Nicole Spillone, took first and fifth place in the Illinois State Diving Championships this year. In addition, Sethna had four other top notch divers who finished 1-2-3-4 in the JV Conference Meet. The MHS Diving Team, under Coach Sethna, had five divers who could score over 300 - no other team in Illinois can boast this depth. Last year, her two top divers also competed in the state meet, both securing finishes in the top 20.
Sethna has coached the Mundelein High School diving team for the past three years, and worked as a volunteer coach with the team the previous two seasons. She is only the fourth female diving coach in Illinois to win this award.
"MHS is extremely proud of Coach Sethna, and the outstanding job she has accomplished in a very short amount of time," commented Mike Dayton, Director of Activities and Community Development.

NIKKI SPILLONE TAKES FIFTH
LUCY HIRT IS 2004 STATE DIVING CHAMP!
MHS
senior Lucy Hirt won Mundelein its first State
Championship since the Mustangs Boys Gymnastic Team won in the
1999-2000 season. In Saturday's finals, clutch dives by Lucy expanded
her points lead from Friday and she won comfortably over Urbana
H.S. senior Marina Mendoza. Nikki Spillone also did very well
on Saturday and moved up to 5th, edging Mallory Mullady of Lake
Forest by 2/10 of a point. Mundelein was the only school
with 2 divers in the Top 12 at the state meet, cementing their
status as the top diving team in the state this year! Overall,
the Mustangs took 19th in the state, equalling their best finish
ever.
CONGRATULATIONS TO LUCY, NIKKI, AND COACH MELISSA SETHNA!

LUCY & NIKKI DIVE INTO THE FINALS!
Lucy

in the Diving Event at the IHSA State Semi-finals held in Evanston
before a standing-room only crowd. Our Mustangs both qualified
for Saturday's finals in the Championship Round. Lucy finished
first in the qualifying event, while Nikki came in sixth. In the
swimming events, sophomore Megan Thompson also
did Mundelein proud as she placed a great 38th in the entire state
in the the 200 yard freestyle and 28th in the 500 Freestyle! Congratulations
to our State Qualifiers! Good luck to our terrific twosome diving
in Saturday's Big Show!

Mustangs
place 5th at Sectionals!
The Mustangs placed
5th at Sectionals behind state powers: Lake Forest, Barrington,
Libertyville, and Stevenson. In doing so, the Mustangs still
managed to break two school records and advance 3 individuals
to the state swim meet. The Mustangs got off to a great
start with the 1-2 punch of Lucy Hirt and Nikki
Spillone as they placed 1-2 respectively in the diving
competition punching their ticket to the state meet. The
swimmers continued the momentum, dropping time but narrowly missing
qualifying their 200 Medley Relay consisting of Megan
Thompson, Sarah Falconer, Caitlin
Falconer and Liza Dickinson by 1.7 seconds.
Sophomore, Megan Thompson, then became the first
female swimmer in school history to qualify in the 200 Freestyle
and in doing so broke her own school record. She also qualified
in the 500 Freestyle later on that day once again becoming the
first female in school history to qualify in that event and lowering
her own school record. Sprinters Sara Marciniak
and Liza Dickinson, competing in their
first sectional missed the state cut in the 50 free each by a
little over a half of a second. The swimmers
kept battling but ended up missing qualifying their 200 Freestyle
relay (Siobhan Larsen, Caitlin Falconer,
Elizabeth Klink, and Sara Marciniak)
and 400 Freestyle relay (Megan Thompson, Liza
Dickinson, Siobhan Larsen, and Sara
Marciniak) by 5 seconds and 2.7 seconds respectively.
Overall the young Mustangs placed higher at Sectionals than they
had the previous 2 years and look forward to the future as next
year they return 10 out of 12 sectional team members! |
