MUSTANGS GO STRONG AT SECTIONAL MEET
The Mundelein Swimming and Diving Team sent out a strong message at the IHSA State qualifying meet in advancing 4 individual swims and 2 relays.
In an extremely fast meet, the Mustangs managed several top 6 swims. Individual State qualfiers were Pat Falconer (200 free-100 free) and Kevin Coughlin (50free-100 free).
The Mustangs erased the disappointing near-misses of the past 2 years in the 200 Free Relay by qualifying this year with Falconer, Coughlin, frosh Will Davidson, and senior Ricky Lukacs.
The Lukacs-Coughlin-Falconer trio joined with senior Zach Purol to qualify 2 seconds under the qualifying time under the 400 Free Relay. Overall the Mustang squad had 97% lifetime best swims
and lots of fans there to see the amazing day! Thanks parents for your support and help all season. We contribute our success to you!

MUSTANGS GET BACK INTO COMPETITION
After 3 grueling weeks of training, training, and more training, the Mustangs got back into the pool at Lake Forest High School on Thursday night. The Scouts' defending conference champs' squad proved to be too deep for the Mustangs. However, the Swimming and Diving team proved that they could swim and dive better than ever before. Even while beat-up and exhausted, the Mustang squad managed to swim at a lifetime best-swims level. Top performances were had by the 1-2 200 free punch from Pat Falconer and Kevin Coughlin, Coughlin again in the 100 free, the 200 FR (less than 2 seconds off the IHSA State cut), and the 400 FR (4 seconds off the IHSA State cut). The Diving squad tried new dives and were cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd. The experience brought the Mustangs more confidence going into the next week as they take on perennial conference foes, the Warren Blue Devils.
Next up: Saturday, College Events Invite at St. Charles East HS

2/23: SLATTERY SWIMS TO 7th PLACE AT STATE
Aaron Slattery finished his amazing high school swimming career with another acccolade: State Finalist. Slattery finished 11th on Friday in the 50 free and 13th in the 100 free (by .01 seconds). In his final swim as a Mustang he surprised the consolation final heat and won with a lifetime best swim of 21.48--good for All-American consideration.
The 400 Free Relay of Kevin Couglin, Pat Falconer, Ricky Lukacs, and Aaron Slattery also competed on Friday and swam to a 24th place finish. It was a great experience, as 3 out of 4 relay members will be returning next year.
What a great season, Mustangs! Great job, Aaron on a spectacular finish at State. Good luck in the future!
Next up: Swim/Dive Banquet Monday night MHS Cafeteria at 7pm.

2/18: MUSTANGS 5th AT SECTIONALS - SEND 4 SWIMMERS TO STATE
TEAMS
Lake Forest 290, Libertyville 243, Stevenson 230, Deerfield 132, Warren 115, Mundelein 115, McHenry 63, Vernon Hills 62, Zion-Benton 45, Woodstock 42, Highland Park 33.
Saturday at Vernon Hills - it was time to show the best area teams how Championship Season is done! Senior Aaron Slattery punched his individual state ticket for the 3rd time taking 2nd in the 50 free and cruising to 3rd place in the 100 free. The 400 Free Relay of Pat Falconer, Kevin Coughlin, Ricky Lukacs, and a blazing 46.45 split from Slattery, also sealed the deal. The relay eclipsed the 3:18.89 qualifying time with a fast 3:17.30, good for 4th place. With 98% lifetime-best swims, the Mustangs also had some close misses for the state meet: Only a freshman, Pat Falconer swam to the 7th place spot in the 200 free with a 1:47.95 (.26 off of the state cut). Kevin Coughlin had two amazing races in both the 50 free, 22.69 (.20 off of the state cut-10th place) and the 100 free, 49.69 (.60 off of the state cut-7th place). The heartbreaker was the 200 free relay (Falconer, Coughlin, Lukacs, Slattery), who touched the wall with a 1:30.20 (.01 off of the state cut-3rd place). That same relay showed that they wouldn't let the day's opportunity slip away and came back with the state cut in the final event, the 400 free relay.
Other Top 12 finishes:
Diving: David Rieck: 286.90, 8th place
200 MR: 1:49.64, 9th place (Mike Mihel, Aaron Purol, Zach Purol, Sean Trinka)

There were several bright spots in the Mustang's line-up, including many more personal best times. Aaron Slattery continued his winning ways in the sprint events, taking the 50 free and the 100 free and anchoring the 1st place 200 free relay (Slattery, Pat Falconer, Kevin Bosshardt, Kevin Coughlin). MUSTANGS LEAVE IT IN THE POOL: SWIMMERS & DIVERS QUALIFY 8 TO IHSA STATE FINALS
With the focus being on the IHSA Sectional Meet throughout the season, the
Mustangs topped off their season by qualifying 8 swimmers and divers to the
IHSA State Final Meet at Evanston next Friday and Saturday. The diving duo
of Bryan Martin and Niko Vergis qualified with their diving scores, placing
5th and 6th in the competition. Junior Aaron Slattery continued his prowess
in the sprint events qualifying in both the 50 and the 100 freestyle events. The final race, the 400 freestyle relay, was the real
crowd-pleaser as Sean Larsen, Slattery, Andrew Peterson, and Geoff Schott qualifed with time to spare and earned a 2nd place, behind eventual team
combined score winners Lake Forest. Also qualifying as alternates for the
400 Freestyle Relay are Junior Kevin Bosshardt and Sophomore Ricky Lukacs.
Overall the Mustang Swimmers wowed the competition by winning most of their
heats and crushing their competition. Also notable were the 98% lifetime
best swims by the team and the team combined score of 165--good for 3rd
place ahead of NSC Conference rivals Warren.
SO CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Senior distance pro Geoff Schott narrowly missed
qualifying in both of his individual races (200 free, 500 free) by a
combined total of .8 seconds. He shaved off 11 seconds in the 500 free and
3.5 seconds in the 200 free from his previous lifetime-bests. The 200 Free
Relay of Kevin Bosshardt, Larsen, Peterson, and Slattery missed qualifying
by .10 seconds, but all had amazing swims! Lastly, Senior Andrew Peterson missed the state-cut in the 50 free by .51 seconds, but had a lifetime-best
swim. Way to go Mustangs!
A SPECIAL THANKS: to all the parents and fans this season! We couldn't
have done it without you! See you at State next weekend!
