MUSTANGS WIN PRAIRIE RIDGE TOURNEY!

The varsity soccer team took first place in an exciting tournament hosted by Prairie Ridge.

MUSTANGS DEFEAT BELVIDERE 8-1 TO WIN TOURNEMENT
With a tie to Prairie Ridge in the second game, the Mustangs were not in the situation they wanted. Ridge and Mundelein were tied in the leader board for the tourney. So the tiebreaker was goals difference, which was not good because Prairie Ridge had won 9- 2 in their first game. Even so, the Mustangs knew what they had to do. Nestor Montiel scored the first goal on a pk to make it 1-0, then Adam Reister, and Manuel Olmos to make it 3-0. Nick Neubauer scored at the end of the half to make it 4-0. Minutes after the 2nd half started Johnny Dimitriu scored a beautiful goal by the 18, that sailed just under the far bar. Jesus Olmos beat the keeper to make it 6- 0 and they were winning in goals difference for the championship. Not long after Prairie Ridge scored twice so now the Mustangs were down a goal. Manuel Olmos scored late in the second half to be tied in goals difference, but they needed another goal for the championship. Literally in the final minute Adam Reister scored and the Mustangs had won the championship. Juan Olmos and Nestor Montiel both had 2 assists. The Mustangs dominated the game, but were put in a difficult position, because they needed to score 8 goals. None the less, they won the championship, and this is the fourth year in a row they have won it.

Goals: Reister 2, Montiel 2, Neubauer, M. Olmos, Dimitriu, J. Olmos
GoalKeeper: Sorby (2 saves)

THE MUSTANGS TIE SECOND GAME AGAINST PRAIRE RIDGE
The varsity soccer team looked to keep to they’re winning ways as they took on the hosts of the tournament, in what some were saying was like the championship of the tournament. The two teams were tied in the standings and were looking to battle it out. As suspected it was a pretty even match to start out, but 10 minutes in the game Prairie Ridge scored. It was off a corner kick and was sent right to the head of Ridge's forward and in to the goal. Not long after though, the Mustangs fought back and scored on an identical play to the one that Prairie Ridge scored on. Nestor Montiel sent a corner kick right to David Burdick for a powerful header, and it was now 1-1. After that goal in the 20th minute it was an evenly battled match, but Mundelein started to gain most of the possession of the ball towards the end of the half. In the second half the Mustangs were controlling the game. Kevin Burda filled in, and the defense held the home team to few chances at goal. The Mustangs were putting tons of pressure on the Ridge box, and kept shooting, but were allowed no goals. The last of the ten minutes were exiting and found Mundelein getting more chances at goal. Tough shots by Manny Olmos, Eric Flores, and Adam Reister challenge the keeper, but the ball just did not want to fall in the net. The game ended in a frustrating 1-1 tie, the Mustangs were sure they had the game.

Goal: Burdick (Montiel)
Goalkeeper: Sorby (4 saves)

From Friday, September 14:
MUSTANGS OPENED TOURNAMENT WITH GOOD WIN 3-0

The Mundelein Mustangs varsity soccer team traveled to Prairie Ridge for the first game in the ridge tournament. They had a little pressure on them because they had won this particular tournament 3 years in a row coming in to it. They’re first game was against Dekalb. The match started out pretty even and interesting pretty quickly. In the 15th minute Kevin Hayek got tangled up with another player from Dekalb and they exchanged a few words, while the referee showed no hesitation to red card both players. So just like that it was a 10 on 10 game now, and the Mustangs started to come alive making some dangerous runs in to Dekalb’s box. Then Mundelein got fouled in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. The shot taker was Nestor Montiel and he beat the keeper guessing with a good shot in the upper right corner in the 20th minute. After the first goal Mundelein was now dominating the possession. The ball was kept in the opponents half of the field and they were putting nonstop pressure on Dekalb. Then a few minutes before the half ended Eric Flores stole the ball and shot a hard and low shot just outside the 18-yard line. The ball was shot so hard it rolled off the keeper and in to the right corner of the net. They ended the first half in a good way, and the 2nd half was much like the first. The Mustangs had the possession and were attacking rapidly. Ten minutes into the second half Nick Neubauer received a great ball from Eric Flores and the junior trapped it and buried it in the corner of the goal. The Mustangs kept pressing and the defense Eric Valin, Jason Zeman, and Kris Gustafson were flawless. The subs came in towards the end of the game and finished the game off, and the Mustangs started the tourney off in an excellent way.

Goals: Montiel (PK), Flores (Montiel), Neubauer (Flores).
Goalkeeper: Sorby (3 saves)

From Tuesday, September 11:
MUSTANGS WIN LONG COLD BATTLE AGAINST LAKES

The Mustangs were looking to improve their winning streak coming off two big wins against Grayslake North and Prospect. It was cold and windy and the Mustangs got an unlucky draw because they were facing a very brutal sun in the first half. The Eagles used this to their advantage and struck early. But Eric Sorby held the team together in goal and made it clear why he is a great keeper. He had 8 saves in just the first half and was one of his better games. With Lakes still applying pressure, the defense Eric Valin, Jason Zeman, and Kris Gustafson fought tough and were key in the whole game for the Mustangs. Then the Mustangs started to get their act together and made some great plays in the last ten minutes of the half. They did not score but left the field in a good way because, there was a lot of pressure put on Lakes at the end of the half. So when the second half came the Mustangs knew what they had to do and played extremely hard. The wings Manny Olmos and Juan Jaimes played great on the sides and kept feeding the ball to the forwards. They had possession and were taking more shots. There was a load of pressure on the Lakes keeper, thanks to David Burdick, Nestor Montiel, and Adam Reister. They were challenging the keeper with every attempt. As the pressure only increased the Mustangs kept fighting and got the goal they were looking for. Adam Reister got a great ball from Eric Flores and Adam took it to goal and finished calmly in the last ten minutes of the game, it was a great shot in the corner. Now with a goal, and the lead they were feeling good. Eric Valin and his composed defense kept the ball out, and the Mustangs had got another win. It was a long night and I bet they were happy it was over. Now the Mustangs take their 3 game winning streak to the Prairie Ridge tournament. GO MUSTANGS!
From Saturday, September 8:
MUSTANGS PREVAIL AGAINST THE KNIGHTS
WITH A 3-1 WIN

On Saturday the 8th of September, the Mundelein varsity soccer team played the Prospect Knights at Prospect high school. The Mustangs came out firing in the beginning and had most of the possession in the first half. About 15 minutes in the game there was already much pressure put on the Prospect keeper, and in the 16th minute Adam Reister scored a great volley off a beautiful ball by Jason Zeman off of a free kick. The Mustangs great defense kept little pressure on keeper Eric Sorby, due to the play of Eric Valin and Kris Gustafson.

Then, with 10 minutes left in the half, the Mustangs struck again when a composed Eric Flores placed the ball in the bottom corner of the net and it was 2-0. That was the end of the 1st half.

At the start of the second half there was a different Prospect team. They came out with a bang and put much pressure on the Mundelein defense. Seven shots were fired in the second half at Keeper Eric Sorby. He made the saves look easy, but one unlucky shot went in the corner of the net. It was a good shot and a hard save, for Eric was screened and had a hard view at the ball.

The Mustangs did not let up and with more pressure Johnny Dimitriou played a great ball to front runner Nestor Montiel. Nestor was relaxed towards the ball and chipped the ball over the keeper and it sailed in to the net to give the Mustangs the insurance goal they needed, 3-1 Mustangs. They played a great game against a good athletic team, but the Mustang pressure was too much for the Knights.
