THE FIRST FATHERS v. SONS GAME:
FATHERS 105 - SONS 55
At the First Father-Son Game, class was in session for the Young Mustangs. Back cuts, fades, curls, you name it the Fathers put on a clinic. Winning 103 to 55, the Fathers were lead by game MVP Coach Knar's 20 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists. "We knew we'd win, by how much is the question. I couldn't have done it alone, every father contributed to this win. We got some Dads with some serious game," said Knar.

That's no lie either, with all eight fathers scoring in double figures. Team Dad cruised all game. Even with the Freshmen coming out shooting hot early, the fathers never panicked. Staying cool and collective, the tides slowly began to change. "We had no answer for their size inside, Mr. O'Brien, Mr. Ciekutis and Mr. DeGuia, wore us down all game," replied Coach Sean Forsythe (Freshmen Coach).

The Fathers' guard play wasn't too shabby neither. Lead by Mr. DeGuzman, Mr. Andrysiak and Mr. Forsythes' full court press, the young Mustangs struggled taking care of the ball. "My Pops was all over me all game, I never really was able to get into a rhythm," said PG, Julienne DeGuzman. "These boys are great kids and great ball players, but experience always wins. We've been playing ball longer than these boys have been alive. Lets be honest, its nice to know you can still whoop up on your boy in basketball! We might not recover physically for weeks, but that 38-point margin will make up for it," replied Mr. Deguzman.

The Freshmen were lead by Ryan Sawvell's 18 points, 8 rebounds. " I didn't bring my A game today because the Dads wouldn't let me, they controlled the paint all game. When I grow up I'll get my revenge!" said Ryan. "Ryan didn't take the loss too well, as he shouldn't, I'm just glad I didn't play. The dads might have scored 150 points," replied Mr. Sawvell.

Plays Of The Game
1) Knars shake and bake pull-up, beyond the arc, over Dickie.
2) Mr. Baerman's one hand tap pass to teammate Mr. Andysiak for a Lay-up.
3) Mr. Baerman's fade-away jumper towards the baseline off a curl.
4) Mr. Ciekutis swoosh three in response to Zack's three the last play down.
5) Professional heckler Mr. Sawvell's heckling of the top of the line refs.

A special thanks to all the parents who contributed to the event. The Food, drinks, snacks were all fantastic, and a thank you to Mrs. Sawvell for working the clock.

With 23 seconds left, the Mustangs had a 2 point lead and the Patriots had the ball. After a few questionable calls that went in the favor of Stevenson, they hit a shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime where they were able to break away from the Mustangs. Andy Rochon led Mundelein in scoring with 26 along with 7 assist. Navjot Singh had 13 with 11 rebounds and Kevin Blackowicz came off the bench and poured in 12.
From Friday, February 1:
ZION-BENTON 84 - MUSTANGS 63

Zion’s hot shooting was too much to handle as they defeated the Mustangs 84-63. The Zee-Bee’s were difficult to defend as they shot 50 percent from the field including 63 percent from 3-point range. Mundelein had another poor shooting night hitting only 36 percent of their shots. They kept the game tight early with the score only 24-20 at the end of the first, but a shaky second quarter put them down 12 at half and then it was Zion in control the rest of the game. Navjot Singh let the way for the ‘Stangs with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Ben Brust was next with 14 points. Kenny Branch came up with 11 and Andy Rochon hit 10 along with 7 assists.

LAKE FOREST 75 - MUSTANGS 66

A tough second quarter didn’t fare well for the Mustangs as the came up short at Lake Forest this past Saturday. After a 10 point deficit at the half, they just couldn’t find the rhythm in the second half to make a run to come back and win. Twice the lead was cut down to 4, but the Scouts would come back with a run of their own and kept the gap open in their favor as they topped the Mustangs 75-66. Navjot Singh and Ben Brust led the way with 20 points each. Singh tallied another double-double on the season as he also rounded up 13 rebounds. Andy Rochon ended the evening with 11 points and 6 assists while Kevin Blackowicz hit 3 three-pointers for 9 points.

MUSTANGS 55 - LAKE ZURICH 50

It wasn’t the prettiest win for the Mustangs, but a win is a win as they topped Lake Zurich, 55-50, at home Tuesday night. They had a hard time getting the ball to drop, but tenacious defense helped them fight off any charge the Bears made. Mundelein was down by as much as 6 in the fourth, but they battled back to with in 2 and Kevin Blackowicz hit a three-pointer to take the lead by 1. After the lead increased to 3 and both teams were having trouble finding a basket, Kenny Branch hit a three after an offensive rebound by Ben Brust which put LZ down 52-46 and eventually the win. Navjot Singh was monstrous with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Aaron Metzger scored 7 and Andy Rochon dished for 7 assists.
From Saturday, January 19:
MUSTANGS 79 - MORGAN PARK 50

The Mustangs bounced back from the loss against Libertyville with a 79-50 victory over a talented Morgan Park team in the “Chops” Billinger Shootout at North Park University. They got out of the gates fast as they took an early 27-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and Morgan Park was in shock as they were hit hard with “the wave.” Four players scored in double figures with Navjot Singh leading the way with 26 and 8 rebounds. Kevin Blackowicz nailed 4 three pointers in route to 17 points along with 6 assists. Andy Rochon also had 6 assists to compliment his 13 points while Kenny Branch scored 10 and Ben Brust snagged 10 rebounds to go along with 7 points.
From Friday, January 18:
LIBERTYVILLE 60 - MUSTANGS 53

Despite a quick 21-4 lead in the first few minutes of the second quarter, the Mustangs let the Libertyville Wildcats climb back into the game and eventually the win for their third loss in conference. Near the last minutes of the first half, the Cats scored 8 points in 30 seconds to shift the momentum in their favor. Then they hit a half court shot at the buzzer to close out the first half. It didn’t help that the Mustangs did not shoot well after the early 17 point lead hitting only 32% of their shots as Libertyville shot for 50%. Navjot Singh led all scorers with 27 and pulled down 8 boards. Eric Pagsanjan scored 7 with 7 assists and Andy Rochon dished out 6.
From Friday, January 11:
MUSTANGS 79 - WARREN 59

The Mustangs come up BIG with a conference win over the Warren Blue Devils last Friday night at home! The Blue Devils came into the game ranked number 20 in the state, but it didn’t matter as Mundelein went on to a 25 point victory. The game was close at first with a 2 point advantage at the half and then they broke it open in the third scoring 10 straight unanswered points and forcing 10 turnovers with their intense defensive pressure and took a 59-44 lead going into the fourth and never looked back.

Sophomore Ben Brust lit it up knocking down 6 three-pointers for a total 30 points. This is the fourth time this season that he has hit the 30 mark. Navjot Singh was huge with 16 points and 12 boards while Kenny Branch netted 12. The Mustangs are now second in conference and look to improve as they take on Libertyville next Friday, January 18th, at home in a televised game. Navjot Singh Arizona Blog Day 7
Hey everybody:
Today was more of a relaxing day, and an eye opener. We packed everything up last night, so we could wake up and check out. After eating breakfast at the hotel, we headed over to Grandpa Knar's house. After sitting down for a while, we went over to the Phoenix Children's Hospital.

There we met the family of cancer patient Patrick Abrahams. The young 14 year old had attended Libertyville high school for two days when he found out he had cancer. They found out when he went to the doctor's office because they thought he had mono. So they moved out to Arizona so they could give him "alternative medicine" which they don't do for children in Illinois.

I don't even know how to put the experience into words, but I'll try my best. It just really puts life into perspective. I mean here's this 14 year old kid who is fighting for his life and here we are complaining about bad days and things. It really shows you how fragile life can be and how much you should appreciate it. Anyway, we went up and gave him a Mundelein basketball shirt that was signed by all of us. For the position that he was in he was very calm and grateful. We took some pictures with him and his family and just talked about things. I hope for the best for Patrick and his family.

After leaving the hospital we went back to Knar's house. There we sat around and watched TV and relaxed. Grandpa Knar had tangerine, lemon, and grapefruit trees. We picked fruit and ate and they were delicious. We spent most of the afternoon playing with a little boy named Charlie, Coach Knar's nephew. The kid kept us busy the whole time with his gibberish talking and his amusing actions. Sadly he grew attached and when it was time to go he started crying :(. Hopefully we will get to see him some time in the future.

Grams Knar made us a great meal which consisted of BBQ pulled pork, sloppy joes, baked beans, and these delicious brownies. We took a couple more photos over by the pool and then went to the mall.

At the mall we went to Coldstone and I had some delicious mint mint chocolate chocolate chip ice cream. After that we went to Just Sports because they were having some sweet deals and I think almost everyone on our team ended up buying a hat -haha- besides Ben cause he looks funny in hats.

So, all-in-all we had a great trip. We took care of business on the court and behaved well off the court while still managing to have fun. And p.s. Coach Knar owes me lunch on Monday after practice because I got 15 boards against Bolder Creek. We took Arizona by storm :).
Sincerely,
Navjot Singh

Navjot Singh Arizona Blog Day 6
Hey everybody:
Today was basically the same morning as yesterday. We woke up around 9, ate breakfast and then went off to shoot around. After an intense shoot around, we showered up and went to Shawn Harlan's house, a MHS alum. We were prepared a deicious meal, trial-mix some rolls, chicken ceaser, and fruit galore. We spent most of the time playing basketball at Mr. Harlan's basketball court in his back yard.

After Knar instructed us to get out of the sun we all came inside and played wii. At first little Nathan, Harlan's 6 year old son, was taking care of business, but after Kevin Barber took hold of the remotee it was game over.

Then we went over to Bolder Creek High School to watch the girls game at 5:30. It was a close game in the first half, but they pulled away and won 69-52.

Then it was time for our game. We came out early and often and did work. Andy and Ben came out hot and pushed us out to an early 20-10 lead at the end of the first. As game went on, the fatigue set in for the Boulder Creek Jaguars. We started pushing the ball and getting lay ups and open shots. Our defensive pressure picked it to as we started causing turnovers and getting easy buckets. At halftime our lead had grown to 20.

After a speech at halftime, we continued our good play. Eric Pagsanjan came out hotter than a pistol in the second half. A better play in the game was when Aaron Metzger went up for a break away dunk and got stuffed by the rim. The crowd roared iin laughter. With strong play we extended our lead to 26 at the end of third quater.

The guard combo of Andy Rochon, Kevin Blackowicz, Ben Brust, and Eric Pagsanjan continued to play great defense and a very big lift came off the bench in Aaron Metzger who played the best game that I have seen out of him this season.

All-in-all we came to Arizona and did what we were supposed to do. We finished 2-0 and reprsented Mundelein and Illinois with pride.
Sincerely,
Navjot Singh

Navjot Singh Arizona Blog Day 5
Hey everybody:
We woke up this morning and got the continental breakfast again. After getting our practice gear, we quickly changed and headed out for our shoot around at Desert Mountain High School. The shoot-around went a lot better than the practices that we have had. We were more focused and intense, most likely because it was game day.

After the shoot-around we gathered up and headed back to the hotel. The "Theif", aka PJ Bregenzer, was up to mischief again. He turned the room tempature in Kevin Blackowicz's room to 84 degrees. Kevin wasn't too happy about it, but it was funny to everyone else.

We had lunch at Chompies and it was ok. I ordered the orginal chicken sandwich and it was ok. Coach Knar empahsized "big dawg big dawg only chicken and turkey" so I didn't have much of a choice. They served the most meat ever on their sandwiches. The sandwiches were about 4 ft high.

After our pre-game meal, we went back to Desert Mountain High School. We sat there and watched our girls team first. They came out pretty lethargic, but they picked it up quickly and it was a good game. They played tough down the stretch and won by 2.

As we were getting ready in the locker rooms we saw a cockroach and Eric Pagsanjan screamed like a little school girl. We were ready and pumped to play our game. And we showed it as we jumped out to an early lead. We kept on our pressure and intensity and pushed out to an early 25 point lead at half...53-27. We were hot from the field, but we cooled down in the second half. But keeping the game at our pace helped us win 78-53. The player of the game had to be Ben Brust who poured in 25 points in the contest.

After taking care of business, we went back to the hotel to relax. We were bumped and bruised, but the bottom line was that we took care of business. The team moms were nice enough to go out and get us KFC. It was delicious! Now we are tired and it is time to get some rest for our game tomorrow. A clean sweep down here would be wonderful, and I am hoping to that we can extend our winning streak to 5 games.
Sincerely,
Navjot Singh

From Thursday, January 3:
MUSTANGS 78 - WOLVES 53

The Mundelein Mustangs came up big with a win against the Wolves of Desert Mountain High School, the 2006-2007 state champions of Arizona. With a big lift in the second quarter and 9 first half three-pointers, the Mustangs put the game away early with a 53-29 lead at the half while keeping Desert Mountain’s top scorer out for most of the game with foul trouble.

The second quarter run was sparked by steals from Eric Pagsanjan and Ben Brust which led to easy buckets and propelled the Mustang offense. The Wolves battled back in the third, but could only cut the lead down to 18 points before Mundelein eventually finished with a 78-53 victory.

Tough defensive pressure on Desert Mountain’s guards, led by Andy Rochon (8 assists), and winning the rebound battle, 41-23, were two big keys to the Mustangs’ success. Kenny Branch snagged 8 rebounds while making it hard for posts players to get the ball in the paint.

Brust had a game high 25 points and 9 rebounds. Navjot Singh scored 21 with 10 rebounds and 6 assists and Pagsanjan netted 15.

The Mustangs play their second of two games Friday, January 4th against Boulder Creek high school. This will conclude the road trip as they look to return back to Illinois undefeated in Arizona.

Navjot Singh Arizona Blog Day 4
Hey everybody:
In my personal opinion today was the best day so far. We woke up early as usual and got breakfast. Then we headed to Ashley Negron's room to get our sweats and practice gear marked for washing. That's when we realized that Matt Pioch had forgot his sweats which we were instructed to bring. He felt like a fool, but we all pointed and made fun.

Practice was sooo hard. I don't know whether it was the temp change, atmosphere change, or jetlag but we came out "soft" and lazy. Coach Knar quickly got us on the line running suicides until we got our minds right. After Coach Knar and Coach Knigge's intense speeches we played great, the way Mundelein basketball is supposed to be played.

Then we headed over to Knigge's grandma's crib. It might have been the coolest house I've ever been to. It was definitely MTV crib worthy. It had a pool in the back, and a great view, and the food that the Knigge family prepared was scrumptious as well. After playing pool we hung out and watched the movie "Shooter" on a projection screen TV. Then it was time for dinner where we had italian galore. We had pasta, mosticholli, brats, brownies, lemon squares, cookies, and shrimp. After dinner we watched the Fiesta bowl.

A funnier moment in the day was when I walked into a clear glass window because it was so clean I thought it was an open door. After the Knigges house we headed over to the Seneca overlook. It was chilly out but it was well worth it. The view was gorgeous and it was good bonding experience. As I slammed my face into the door, I realized it wasn't... hahaha. Anyway, as it got dark we headed back to the hotel where it was emphasized that we should get some sleep because gameday is finally here. It is time to do what we do best and that is actually the reason that we are out here.

Throughout this trip I have already learned that individuals do not make a team. And that if an individual has his own agenda, a team just doesn't work. A team is a group of people that are working towards a similar goal. And, especially for this team, every player contributes to our team's successes and failures - whether it be seen on the stat sheets or newspapers.
Sincerely,
Navjot Singh

Navjot Singh Arizona Blog Day 3
Hey everybody:
The weather today was gorgeous, about 65 and sunny. Lucky for us we had our relaxing day. We awoke whenever we felt like it, worry free. Some of us decided to get up early to catch the continental breakfast. We learned interesting things like that Mike Gerton is allergic to bananas. After eating, most of us went back to bed because it was 8 AM. We woke up later and decided to go hang out by the hotel pool. It wasn't the greatest pool, but the warm weather made it seem so, even more so after the snow that fell in Mundelein before we left. We spent a majority of the afternoon throwing balls around the pool, playing a little pool football, hot tubbing (personal fav), and working on our tans.

Mr. Ackley was kind enough to buy us lunch from Subway. As we awaited our subs, we sat in the hotel rooms and watched bowl games all day. Although they weren't as fun as actually being there like the day before, we still had fun placing dumb bets and just horsing around like kids do. One of the funnier things that happened today was that PJ Bregenzer had been stealing people's shoes and putting them in fridges. Jeff Camplin and Matt Pioch were freaking out for most of the day until they were found; we all had a good laugh.

After laying around some more and getting some ankle treatment for my gimpy ankle, we were lucky enough to go to OUTBACK on the Brusts!!! It was one of the most delicious meals that I have ever eaten. We are planning on seeing another movie after dinner tonight, and I can't wait to sleep in and take care of business in practice tomorrow. Although relaxing is always fun, we all know that we came here for one reason and one reason only and that is to win two basketball games.
Sincerely,
Navjot Singh

Navjot Singh Arizona Blog Day 2
Hey everybody:
Day 2 has been a wonderful experience. After receiving a wonderful breakfast with exceptional waffles, we showered up and headed for Boulder Creek High School for practice. We met up with Shawn Harlan, a friend of Coach Knar and Knigge and an MHS graduate, who provided us with drinks and fruit.

After our grueling practice we rushed out and ate lunch at Subway. After eating, we went back to the hotel and showered quickly, so we could make it to the Insight Bowl. Mr. Evans (71) and Mr. Ackley (77) took a long time to get to our seats which are at the top of the stadium. It was a feat which was greeted with a standing ovation. OSU came out ready to play and put the Hoosiers out early in the football game. The team had fun mingling with fans and people while eating nachos and brats (which were sub-par). A great half time show was put on by OSU's marching band with the flags and formations.

For the rest of the night we hung out outside of the football arena and attended the concerts that were going on. After getting a long night of having fun, we were all tired and ready for bed. We were excited for tomorrow which is supposed to be our "chill" day. A.k.a pool day.
Sincerely,
Navjot Singh

Navjot Singh Arizona Blog Day 1
Click for a larger versionHey there everybody: Today was an interesting day. We slept over at Coach Knar's house and ended up sleeping for an astonishing hour. Before we could leave Coach Knar decided to give Chris Franz, Jeff Camplin, Andy Rochon, and myself a haircut. He did such a splendid job that he might quit after this season to pursue a career in hair cuttery. After we were abruptly awakened, we all met up at the high school at 4 in the morning. The team was so tired from the night before, it was silent on the bus. The check-in went flawlessly and so did the plane ride. Mike Gerton was nervous because it was his first time ever flying. After getting our rental vans we checked into the hotel and hit up the mall, where we ate and browsed around. But while laying in the sun awaiting hotel check-in, I realized that I had lost my wallet!!!! GONE!!! It was dropped like a no-look pass from Andy Rochon to Kenny Branch.

The weather was b-e-a-utiful. We can ask for nothing more as it was about 65 degrees and sunny. And later tonight we plan to watch a movie as a team and go swimming at the hotel pool which would be a perfect way to top off our day. We are lucky enough to be joined by the girls team which should make the trip even more fun. I couldn't ask for a better way to spend my senior year winter break than with my team hanging out in ARIZONA. I'm sure this trip will give us memories and moments that we will cherish forever.

A great thanks to everyone who made this trip possible by committing their time and money. Also, a thanks to MHS for making this trip possible. Your efforts and kindness has not gone unnoticed.

MUSTANGS 87 - JOHNSBURG 55
7th PLACE IN JACOBS TOURNEY

The Mustangs offense and defense was too much to handle for Johnsburg high school. Coming out of the gates with a great start, they took a commanding 16 point lead at the end of the first to take control of the game. Johnsburg tried to put up a fight in the second, but the ‘Stangs still managed to extend the lead to 25 at the break. The game was then completely out of reach as the difference was increased to 37 points going into the fourth. Ben Brust hit 6 three pointers and scored a total 30 points on the day. Navjot Singh continues to impress with a 17 point, 11 rebound performance. Kenny Branch came strong with 10 points and 8 rebounds and Kevin Blackowicz and Aaron Metzger gave a great lift off the bench with 9 and 8 points each. All together the Mustangs hit 13 3-pointers and were two away from breaking the Jacobs Tournament record for 3’s in a game. A record they set last year in the tournament. They now will travel to Arizona for 7 days to play 2 games versus Boulder Creek high school (the 2006-2007 Arizona state champions) and Desert Mountain high school. Wish both the boy and girl varsity teams good luck and a safe trip!

MUSTANGS 66 - PRAIRIE RIDGE 43

Prairie Ridge probably thought they didn’t have to deal with Mundelein after the Mustang Thanksgiving Tourney earlier in the season, but found themselves having to match up against the ‘Stangs yet again. Again, it was lopsided game as the Mustangs dominated the tempo of the game with aggressive defense and by controlling the rebounding battle. Navjot Singh led the way with 25 points and 12 rebounds to add another double-double on the season. Ben Brust and Eric Pagsanjan had 11 and 10 points respectively, while Andy Rochon delivered 8 assists to compliment his tough pressure he put on the Prairie Ridge guards.

Ben Brust had a career high 29 points, hitting 6 three-pointers, and snatched down 7 rebounds. Kevin Blackowicz was also lights out nailing 5 from long range for a total 15 points along with 4 steals. Navjot Singh was unable to find his shooting touch only scoring 10 points, but came up big with 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Andy Rochon did a great job controlling the game offensively with 9 assists and leading the team’s strong defensive pressure that flustered the Wauconda guards into turnovers. CRYSTAL LAKE CENTRAL 82 - MUSTANGS 76

The boy’s varsity suffered another crucial loss in a game against Crystal Lake Central. They led as much as 11 points in the third, but that lead was cut down to 3 going into the fourth and then were outscored 28-19. A large number of fouls late in the game also hurt which sent CLC to the foul line and quickly fouled out Navjot Singh (30 points) and Kenny Branch (5 points). Andy Rochon played well for the Mustangs with 16 points and 7 assists as well as P.J. Bregenzer who was 4-4 from the field scoring 8 points in 8 minutes before coming out of the game from a shoulder injury.

ZION-BENTON 81 - MUSTANGS 66

The weekend didn’t get any better as the Mustang’s shooting woes carried over in a trip to Zion-Benton Saturday evening. Despite the 15 point difference at the end of regulation, the game was much closer than it seemed. The halftime deficit was only 2 points, but a shaky third quarter set them back 9 points going into the fourth. Even though the shots still didn’t fall, they still battled back with offensive rebounds from Ben Brust, who finished with 18 points, and Navjot Singh who ended with 22 points. Senior Kenny Branch also had 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Coming up short for the second night in a row, the team’s record drops to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in conference.
