At the second of seven meetings, the M-PACT parent-community group heard from architects about the condition of the facilities at the high school.
The evening began with a PowerPoint presentation by Legat Architects who conducted a thorough evaluation of the facilities of the high school campus. The areas of the facilities that need attention were put into the groups of “poor condition” and “fair condition.” Those include:
| Poor Condition: |
| • |
Repair safety related items (bridge/exterior stair, etc.) |
| • |
HVAC, Ventilation and System balancing |
| • |
Galvanized piping replacement |
| • |
Finishes that are in disrepair (walls, doors, floors, etc.) |
| • |
Study air ex-filtration in the Natatorium and potential damage to the facility |
| • |
Protect the building’s systems from power surge |
| • |
Projected Cost: $4,777,422 |
| |
|
| Fair Condition: |
| • |
Replace single pane windows |
| • |
Deepen the pool per the code changes |
| • |
Repair or replace auditorium seating; examine auditorium acoustics |
| • |
Increase site utilization |
| • |
Upgrade building automation systems |
| • |
HVAC |
| • |
Projected cost: $12,801,448 |
Legat also conducted a space analysis and determined that for the current enrollment of about 2,300 students, some of the use of space will need to be redistributed.
After the formal presentation, the audience was put into groups in order to complete a series of tasks based on the presentation. Among those tasks were to prioritize the facilities condition analysis; develop options or solutions for facilities improvements; provide a list of options that would NOT be acceptable, such as mobile classrooms or larger class sizes; and give suggestions for the next facilities meeting.
The next M-PACT meeting will address Academics on January 24, 2008. To attend this 7 pm meeting, interested people should call 847-949-2200, Extension 1210, or email m-pact@mhs.k12.il.us for more information.
