Did you get your listening CD?
All jazz band members should have received a listening CD with several of the tunes to be performed this year as well as some tracks to get you started with jazz listening. Just like any other language, the best way to learn is to listen and imitate. Your local library has a very large listening library that you can use to your advantage. Be sure to visit the website (http://www.fremontlibrary.org/), search the catalogue using the "Powersearch" and put "Jazz" in the subject. You'll be amazed at what you find. PS - Fremont Public Library does not currently have a limit on the number of audio visual materials that can be checked out at one time. Grow your brain, listen to music!
Local Jazz Venues
World-class creative music is literally in your back yard. Jazz is still very much alive in Chicago, you just have to know where to look. Most academic institutions have at least one jazz performance group. Be sure to check the performance calendars at CLC, NIU, DePaul, Northwestern, Roosevelt (CCPA) and UIC just to name a few in the area. If you are looking for live creative music that exists outside of academia, here are some venues in the area that you can count on. (Please note, though the music is top-notch, these venues vary in their family friendliness. Parents and students should review any venue's website for rules regarding minors etc. before attending.)
The Green Mill Chicago: http://greenmilljazz.com/index.html (great venue, not the most family friendly)
The Jazz Showcase: http://www.jazzshowcase.com (long-standing, world-class venue, Sunday matinees open to minors)
Joe's BeBop Cafe: http://www.joesbebop.com/ (music ranges greatly, very family friendly at Navy Pier)
Fitzgerald's Nightclub: http://www.fitzgeraldsnightclub.com/ (good, small bar-type club, not the most family friendly)
Chicago Jazz Festival: http://www.chicagojazzfestival.org/ (free festival in Millenium and Grant parks in late August, everyone should take advantage!)
The Velvet Lounge: http://www.velvetlounge.net/ (eccletic and avant-garde creative music, not the most family friendly)
The Ravinia Festival: http://www.ravinia.org/ (can't beat the $10 lawn seats for a huge variety of music, including jazz, throughout the summer, very family friendly)
Jazz Combos
There are two separate, curricular jazz combos. Students were placed in these groups because they expressed a strong desire to develop their soloing. These groups are for focused, small-group work and will have formal and informal community performances. If you are a student who is listed in a combo, but feel that it might be too challenging for you, tell Mr. Farmer during the informational meeting and adjustments will be made to the roster. All jazz students will have opportunity to begin a study of improvisation as a part of their big band experience. Feel free to contact Mr. Farmer with any questions or concerns.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Mr. Farmer at (847) 949-2200 x 1428 or mfarmer@mhs.k12.il.us.
About the MHS Jazz Bands
The jazz bands are open to all students enrolled in concert band. Piano, guitar, and bass players are not required to play in concert band to be a part of jazz band. All students audition for placement in one of three ensembles.
The top jazz band is the Jazz Ensemble. It will consist of about 19-23 students and it is open to any student that auditions. We would like to form two jazz lab bands again this year. I am confident that we have the quality musicians to do it. However, we will be creating a sequential setup for the jazz labs this year. That means that there will be a Jazz Lab I and Jazz Lab II instead of Red and Grey Bands that were "separate but equal." The MHS Jazz Bands will sport a revised schedule for 2006. The MHS Jazz Ensemble will have increased weekly practice time.
The Jazz Ensemble will rehearse 2 mornings each week during the early bird period. In addition, we will have after school rehearsals on Tuesday from 5:307:30. The jazz labs will rehearse one morning each week and will rehearse after school on Wednesdays. The jazz labs will alternate their after school rehearsal times between 3:30-5:00 and 5:00-6:30. This is done so that students involved in sports will only miss practice once every two weeks.
This schedule allows each ensemble increased rehearsal time over last year's schedule. It also moves jazz band out of the morning exclusively, improving consciousness, attention and attendance. Each jazz band will be instructed by Mr. Farmer and will have the opportunity to participate in an off-site festival. The jazz bands will also be returning to pep band duty this year. Each band will perform at approximately three pep events including boy's basketball, girl's basketball, and possibly girl's volleyball. More information on pep band will follow. |
