Essay Guidelines

	Thesis:
	•	One sentence statement
	•	Main idea of the essay; argument/assertion
	•	Must be in the introduction
	•	Underline your thesis statement
	Paragraph Structure:
	•	5 to 7 sentences per paragraph
	•	Body paragraphs must relate to thesis statement.
	•	Topic Sentences: Give reader and overview of the paragraph.
	•	Transition Sentence: Links ideas in body paragraphs.
	Grammatical Structure:
	•	No first or second person (I, me, you, my, etc)
	•	Main idea of the essay; argument/assertion
	•	Appropriate capitalization
	•	Proof read!
	Format:
	•	Double Space
	•	Times New Roman
	•	12 point Font
	•	1 inch margins
