WORLD STUDIES - Overview

1. What role does power have in affecting societies?  
2. How does geography affect human societies?  
3. What causes change/continuity in societies?  
4. What role does culture play in shaping societies?  
5. What role do ideas play in developing societies and affecting change?  
Course Objectives:      
1. Differentiate between types of power.  
2. Recognize the creation, maintenance, and challenges to power.  
3. Apply the five themes of geography.  
4. Determine how human societies and living systems are interconnected.  
5. Compare and contrast the distinctive features of specific historical periods (ancient through post-modern)  
6. Explain how societies continually evolve (cause/effect; change/continuity).  
7. Define culture as the “good life” i.e. through a set of ideas, values, norms, and beliefs of societies.  
8. Analyze and critique different versions of the “good life”.  
9. Explain the effects of ideas on societies.  
10. Differentiate between different types of ideas (religious, philosophical, political etc)  
11. Identify the factors causing the acceptance and resistance of ideas.
