This course emphasizes the development of skills in listening comprehension, reading comprehension and spoken French. Students will learn to express themselves in written French as well. They also develop an appreciation for the cultural diversity of the French-speaking world. Students are taught survival skills and are expected to use the French they learn both inside the classroom. Students attend the language lab regularly to develop listening skills. A minimum of 30 minutes per night of homework and review is expected. |

French 2 begins with a review of French 1. Students advance their study of language structure and more complex grammar to become more proficient readers and writers. They continue to develop reading comprehension, broaden their vocabulary, explore cultural topics and speak only French in the classroom. Students attend the language lab regularly to continue to develop listening skills. A minimum of 30 minutes per night of homework and review is expected. |

French 3 enables students to further develop their speaking and writing proficiency. In terms of reading, students will begin to interpret authentic literature of greater length written by and for native speakers, and to respond to it both orally and in writing. Students also continue to develop their ability for self-expression in French. A cultural exploration of France is continued as well. Students attend the language lab regularly to continue to develop listening skills. A minimum of 45 minutes per night of homework and review is expected. |

French 4 emphasizes fluency of speech, and expansion of vocabulary and a precision of grammatical structures. New grammar is studied as well. Students continue to develop and refine writing skills and read and analyze a novel in French. Classroom discussion is conducted in French and centers on current events, topics of interest and the literature being studied. Students attend the language lab regularly to continue to develop listening skills. A minimum of 45 minutes per night of homework and review is expected. |

Advanced Placement French is a fifth-year course. In addition to new grammar, students review structure from the previous four years in anticipation of the AP exam. Oral proficiency is emphasized by listening to and discussing interviews of native speakers, news reports, film and songs. In order to improve reading skills, students read a sampling of French literature and study a French novel. Written skills are improved through writing and revision of journals, essays and compositions. Students attend the language lab regularly to fine-tune listening and speaking skills. A minimum of 60 minutes per night of homework and review is expected.
*It is highly recommended that all students in an Advanced Placement course take the Advanced Placement Exam offered each May by the College Board.

This course is geared for students (native and non-native speakers alike) who are proficient in French and enjoy literature. Literature from a variety of French-speaking countries will be read in and outside of class. Students will react to the pieces orally and in essays, as well as via skits, creative writing assignments, and other projects. The course is conducted entirely in French, and students will have the opportunity to study works from a variety of genres, including short stories, essays, poetry, and a short novel. |

Spanish 1B is for students who have completed Spanish 1 at the Junior High level and have demonstrated the ability to write in Spanish but are having difficulty with the spoken language. The course is designed to help these students develop the skills necessary to succeed in a Level 2 immersion classroom. Spoken Spanish is the emphasis of the course. Course vocabulary and grammar from Spanish 1 are reviewed and students are prepared for entrance into Spanish 2. Spanish 1B and Spanish 2 must be taken in the same year. |

Finally, students will learn to recognize the relationship between culture and language, the variety of ways (socially, artistically and historically) that Spanish speakers express their cultural values, and identify the major geographical regions of the Spanish-speaking world as well as have the opportunity to explore a Spanish-speaking country. |

This course is primarily intended to prepare students for the comprehensive AP Exam. This course contains an intensive grammar review as well as new grammar not previously introduced. Students will read literature of Hispanic authors and discuss these works orally as well as in written critiques. Students will work on the written, oral, reading and aural skills needed to succeed on the AP exam as well as to refine their skills to survive in the target culture.

Spanish for Native Speakers is for Hispanic students who speak Spanish but need to develop reading and writing skills. Common errors in spelling and grammar are addressed. Students will broaden their vocabulary as well as read authentic literature written by native speakers. They will also discuss Hispanic cultures as well as define their own identity as Hispanics. |
