University of Illinois at Urbana - Admission Notes
- There is a high degree of competition for admission to the schools or “colleges” within the university. There is usually not an opportunity for a student to ask for reconsideration for an alternate program after the initial admission decision has been made.
- Three and one-half years of math including trigonometry are required for admission to the Schools of Agriculture, Consumer Arts, Environmental Science, Engineering, Fine and Applied Arts, and Architectural Studies.
- The foreign language requirement for graduation (not admission) is increasing.
Financial Aid
Financial aid comes in one of the following four forms: grants, scholarships, work-study and loans. Grants and scholarships are considered “gift help” because they represent money that is given to students. Work-study and loans are considered “self-help” because they provide money that must either be earned or repaid.
1. Grant - money that is given to a student, usually because of financial need.
2. Scholarship - money that is awarded because of exceptional academic achievement, an outstanding talent or skill, and/or financial need.
3. Work-Study - money a student earns by working at a college job, usually 10-15 hours a week.
4. Loan - borrowed money that must be repaid.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, otherwise known as the FAFSA, will be available in the College & Career Center in January. You may apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
