Teaching About Controversial Issues |
| |
| |
Discussion of controversial issues should be age-appropriate, serve an educational purpose, be consistent with the curriculum, and present a balanced view.
The student shall be provided the opportunity to study and discuss issues of a controversial nature in order that he/she may understand and make a meaningful contribution to society.
The controversial issues that are studied shall be relevant to the educational purposes of the school courses and shall be appropriate for the maturity level of the students.
Teachers shall present information factually and impartially and shall encourage students to think for themselves, to be objective and to arrive at their own conclusions. While teachers may express personal views during the period of discussion and study, they shall act ethically and shall not attempt to force their own views on the students.
The opportunity to study controversial issues does not constitute endorsement of either side of the issues by the school.
The Board of Education shall support the teachers and administrators when acting in accordance with this policy. |
