Student Support for Learning

As part of its initiative to increase student achievement, Mundelein High School has available a number of programs to support students in their learning.  One of these programs takes place in the summer, for incoming freshmen who have an identified need for extra attention in transitioning to high school.  Another occurs during the course of the high school day; it allows the student time during the day to focus on homework and projects, with the support of a certified teacher.  The others occur after the school day ends, with available tutors to assist students who may have questions regarding their classes and their work.

Students and their families will be contacted if Mundelein High School finds them eligible for:

BRIDGES SUMMER PROGRAM
Prerequisite:    Placement by recommendation
Open To:        Grade 9
Length:           Summer school
Credits:          n/a

The Bridges summer program will provide incoming freshmen students with an orientation to Mundelein High School.  This program will include specific instruction in math concepts, reading, writing, and computer skills.  Fieldtrips will be organized that support the topics and skills necessary for student success.  For those students required to take this class by their Mundelein High School counselor, there will be no fee and transportation will be provided.

Parents and incoming freshmen or sophomore students may opt for elective credit the following course:

GUIDED STUDY
Prerequisite:    None
Open To:        Grades 9-10
Length:           1 term
Credits:          0.5

This course supports those students who struggle with the responsibilities of a high school student, and/or who would like to have time during the day to work with a certified teacher and instructional assistant as they complete homework and project responsibilities tied to the other courses in which they are enrolled.  There will be direct instruction on strategies in the areas of time management, organization, work completion, testing and study skills; students will have the opportunity to incorporate presented strategies during the work assistance portion of each class. In addition, there will be time provided for students to be pulled out for specified work with a specialist (e.g., reading, social work, special education, math instruction).  This course runs for 1 term, and may be repeated as recommended by the counselor or where there are available seats.  Incoming students receiving special services or recommended for greater support in particular subject areas will be required to take this course.  Also, freshmen who fail one or more core courses will automatically be placed in this course in the subsequent term.

Other options for students during the course of the school year include:

WALK-IN TUTORING
Open To:        Grades 9-12

Students who need assistance with their coursework particularly in English and/or Math may simply walk in to the Tutoring Center (in the Media Center) after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.  They must sign in and then have a seat and work on homework until a tutor can get to them.  For those who typically take a bus to and from school, there will be a bus at the front entrance of the school that will leave just after 5:00 p.m. to transport students home.

MANDATORY TUTORING
Prerequisite:    Placement by administration
Open To:        Grades 9-10

Students who may need additional support beyond the Guided Study may also be assigned to mandatory tutoring; this placement is made by administration, or by agreement between the parent and the student’s counselor.  Mandatory Tutoring is scheduled at the same time as Walk-In Tutoring, but operates in the back of the Media Center.  Tutors there are provided a weekly grade update on each student assigned, so that they might better work with students; students are expected to attend Mandatory Tutoring until all of their grades are C or above.  Tutoring here generally works beyond subject-specific instruction, and may include one on one teaching of effective study and organizational habits.  Along with Walk-In Tutoring, the bus is available at 5:00 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to provide transportation for those who need it.
